Description
Volcán de Fuego, Guatemala. After climbing all day in torrential rain, we enjoyed a hot chocolate by the fire, feeling the rumbling beneath us, hearing the explosions but unable to see anything through the clouds. I was praying, willing with all my might for the clouds to part. Just before we were about to give up, we saw a glimpse of red molten lava explode through the clouds. Then they parted and we all stood there, jaws dropped. Streams of red glittering molten rubies exploding into the sky and down the side of the volcano in the pitch black. This was at dawn, we summited in pitch black and watched the volcanoes peeking through the pinkey orangey purpely haze as the sun rose, as far as the eye could see.
